Students Wrote an AI Policy. Here's the Homework Version for Home
Students from all 50 US states drafted a school AI proposal. Borrow its strongest ideas to create a five-clause household rule for AI-assisted homework.

In July 2026, student leaders from all 50 US states drafted their own national
AI-in-schools proposal — and they deliberately left one section to parents.
Here's how to turn that into a working AI rule for homework at home.
What actually happened
At America's Youth AI Festival in Boston this summer, "student senators" from
every US state spent three days debating and then adopting a student-drafted
proposal they call the STUDENT FIRST Act of 2026 — Safe Technology Use,
Data Privacy, and Ethical Norms for Teaching. The event was hosted by Day of
AI, MIT RAISE, The School Superintendents Association (AASA), and the Edward M.
Kennedy Institute, and the proposal is being shared with AASA's roughly 10,000
member districts as a discussion starter.
Two honesty notes before we borrow from it:
- It is not a law. It's a student-drafted framework — the organisers
describe it as "a practical starting point… rather than a finished piece of
legislation." Nothing in it binds any school. - That's exactly why it's useful to families. It shows what students
themselves think fair AI rules look like — which is a much better starting
point for a household conversation than a rule imposed from above.
Three ideas the students got right
Reading the act's text, three provisions translate almost directly to homework
at home.
1. Transparency beats surprise. Section 1 would require organisations
offering generative AI to schools to disclose known biases, and schools to pass
that information to parents. The home version: your family should be able to
name which AI tools are in play for schoolwork, what each is for, and what
each gets wrong. A rule nobody can list isn't a rule — it's a mood.
2. Process for disputes. Section 2 gives students the right to appeal
wrongful-AI-use accusations and asks them to keep evidence like document
histories for major assignments. However you feel about AI detectors, the
underlying instinct is sound: accusations need evidence, and students need a
way to show their work. At home, "show me the draft history" is a fairer
conversation than "this sounds like a chatbot."
3. AI literacy is a subject, not a slogan. Section 2 lists what AI
education should cover: misinformation, plagiarism, bias, privacy, appropriate
academic use, even environmental impact. You don't need a classroom for that —
those are dinner-table topics.
The clause that matters most: Section 3
The students' parent subcommittee wrote the home piece explicitly. Section 3
says parents should encourage balanced technology habits and reinforce ethical
academic behaviour at home — and then states the key line directly:
"It is up to the parent to set the rules for the student's approach to AI at
home."
Even a room full of teenagers writing national policy didn't expect schools to
decide what happens at the kitchen table. That part is yours.
And it's a live question, not a hypothetical. In Pew Research Center's February
2026 report, 45% of US teens (13–17) said they don't use chatbots for
schoolwork at all — but 10% said they use them for all or most of it, with
another 44% using them for some or a little. Common Sense Media's 2026 census
found 86% of US kids aged 9–17 have used AI, and 85% of those users have used
it for schoolwork. Both surveys are descriptive snapshots, not verdicts — but
they mean most households will face an "is this allowed?" moment this school
year, if they haven't already.
The homework version: five clauses to borrow
Draft your own one-page family AI rule. Here's a framework adapted from the
students' structure:
- The named-tools clause. List which AI tools are allowed for homework
(e.g. "a chatbot for explaining a concept, not for writing the answer").
If it's not on the list, it's not allowed — and adding to the list is a
conversation, not a quiet install. - The graded-work clause. Borrow the act's distinction between graded and
non-graded work: AI for practice and revision is one thing; AI touching
anything that gets marked is another. Write your line down. - The show-your-work clause. For big assignments, keep drafts and version
history. It protects the student from false accusations and makes honest
work easy to demonstrate. - The ask-first clause. Unsure whether a use is allowed? Ask before, not
after. Exceptions should be named and time-limited, while disputes follow a clear process. - The annual-review clause. The act would have schools tell families each
year what AI use is coming. Do the same at home: revisit the rule each term,
because the tools and the school's policy will both move.
